Junction 42
Wastewater Lift Station

Red Deer County

Project Description

Tagish Engineering was commissioned to design, tender and inspect the construction for a sanitary Lift Station facility servicing the Junction 42 development east of Penhold. The project consisted of a new 8m deep prefabricated lift station, valve chamber and meter chamber and associated surface works. The lift station connected into an existing 450mm gravity main and a 150mm and 300mm force main.

The Tagish team was responsible for all steps of the process from conceptual design with input from both Xylem and Barski for final details, through to post construction engineering. Other services such as coordination with the local shallow utility companies, public notification, construction inspection and quality control were also provided by Tagish Engineering on this project.  Close coordination with property owners was very important to ensure constructability and as well as reducing the overall contamination potential from clubroot. The coordination and sequencing of onsite equipment was also essential to achieving a safe delivery of the project when working beneath many overhead cables and alongside a deteriorating gas main.

An interesting project to execute during a very wet year and in a flood plain. The overall scope of the project was simple in its concept, but due to the high levels of surface water in a low-lying area, managing flood water for an 8m deep Lift Station construction posed many challenges. Electrical coordination between multiple parties was also a key element running up towards commissioning which resulted in a successful switch on and operation. Due to the low-lying area, we also regraded the surrounding area, access road as well as new ditches to maintain a dry site.
